Mets Fans Hold "Million Manny March" and 40 People Show Up

NY Daily News - Chants of "Man-ny! Man-ny!" drowned out the sound of traffic zipping up Sixth Ave. Thursday night as rabid Mets fans gathered outside SportsNet New York's studios and mugged for the cameras, imploring the Wilpons and Omar Minaya to bring free agent Manny Ramirez to Queens. The "Million Manny March" boasted only about 40 people, but they were screaming on behalf of Mets fans everywhere when they talked about the heartache of the past two seasons - a heartache they're certain Ramirez can cure. "He's got the skill set we need, and the attitude and swagger to play in New York," said Justin Killian, a 36-year-old lawyer who helped organize the rally on nyfuturestars.com. "He'll be like the rain man, just go up and hit.... Manny won't think. He might forget his pants, but he'll give you four hits a game."

You know how every group of guys has to have that one, goofy loser? That un-self-aware weirdo who doesn't get why he's so funny who makes the circle of friends complete? That's what Mets fans are to the rest of Major League Baseball. They're our Dwight Schrute. Our Brick Tamland. Honestly, I've looked at this story from 360 different degrees, and I can't decide if it's more funny or sad. That someone would organize a rally to beg the team to sign a guy who's not even rumored to be on the Mets radar is both pathetic and strangely endearing. But then to get 40 people to actually show up with signs and everything... I can't decide if they're to be admired or pitied. Are they diehards or losers? But when they're drumming up all this support for a guy who by their own admission is a flaky, low-IQ savant who'll quit on them the first chance it suits him, I'm going to have to go with "losers." If 40 Mets fans showed up for this, I'm going to bet that at least 38 of them are on some kind of a court-mandated ankle bracelet.

PS. The Red Sox get more people than that to watch the equipment van leave.
